A few months ago, Sig Sauer launched the Cross Magnum in .300 Winchester Magnum, and we’ve put this impressive rifle to the test. After firing numerous rounds at varying distances—some extending beyond 1,000 yards—we're excited to share our insights on the Sig Cross Magnum and what it offers to shooters.
The Cross lineup represents a significant evolution in bolt-action rifles, merging traditional functionality with modern components. Its design features familiar AR-style controls, user-friendly swappable barrels for caliber changes, and a folding stock for compactness. Weighing in at just 8.9 pounds, the Cross Magnum is notably lightweight for a magnum rifle, making it an excellent choice for long hunting expeditions.
A standout feature is its one-piece receiver design, a departure from the conventional tubular structures of traditional bolt actions. This design not only reduces weight but also enhances customization potential, allowing for easy swapping of barrels, grips, and handguards.
The .300 WM caliber delivers significant kinetic energy, making it ideal for hunting large game like elk. During our testing, we achieved groups around 1 MOA at 100 yards, which is commendable for a magnum round. Notably, we observed that magnum rounds sometimes perform better at longer distances, a fascinating aspect worth exploring further.
One of the rifle's key highlights is its quick-change barrel system, enabling users to switch to other long-action calibers, including various PRC rounds. The .300 WM barrel features a 1:9 twist rate, which aids in stabilizing heavier projectiles, contributing to the rifle's accuracy.
The Cross Magnum incorporates several enhancements over its predecessor. The ARCA rail on the underside facilitates the attachment of accessories, allowing for quick adjustments—crucial for dynamic hunting scenarios. M-LOK slots are also available, providing further customization options.
The ergonomics of this rifle are impressive, with a vertical grip that feels natural and a safety mechanism that doubles as a thumb rest. The magazine release has been significantly improved, now featuring a larger button that can be activated with ease on either side of the trigger guard.
Another major upgrade is the two-stage trigger, which offers a crisp pull at around 2.5 pounds. The stock hinge has also seen improvements, now featuring a robust and intuitive button for unlocking, making it easier to fold and unfold.
The Cross Magnum boasts a striking anodized brown finish, referred to by Sig as Coyote. This coating not only enhances the rifle's visual appeal but also provides a level of durability that outperforms traditional paint finishes.
In summary, the Sig Cross Magnum is a remarkable addition to the bolt-action rifle category. With its modern enhancements, user-friendly features, and the capability to handle magnum calibers, it stands out as a unique offering in today's market. If you’re in the market for a versatile hunting rifle that combines traditional design with cutting-edge technology, the Cross Magnum is worth considering. As we look ahead, we can't help but hope for a micro action variant from Sig, ready to accommodate popular calibers like .300 Blackout, 5.56, and 6 ARC.
Where do I recommend purchasing one? I'm glad you asked!
